Rabbi's Week in Review
Fay and I were out in Sonoma last week to celebrate a big birthday (Fay’s, not mine). While I don’t write a whole lot about nature in this blog, two experiences with nature stand out.
We had a day out to hike in the state park’s redwood forest (I know, go ahead and continue the song…to the gulf stream water), and from there headed to the Pacific coast. Seeing majestic 1300 and 1400 year old trees was both awe inspiring and peaceful. Towering over three hundred feet high, it gives one a sense of our relative smallness...read more.
This Week's Torah Portion Parasaht Vayera (Bereishit/Genesis 18:1-22:24) This week we read of Avraham and Sarah welcoming strangers, people they are meeting for the first time with an open heart and extraordinary hospitality. (After all, when is the last time you were a guest in someone’s home and they washed your feet.) This narrative, occurring before we ever read of the Mitzvot-the commandments regarding not oppressing and loving the stranger, is a message about those we do not really know, to lead with a generosity of spirit, and to overcome our fear of the unknown. As an aside, participating with and making a significant contribution to the hospitality of Avraham and Sarah was Ishmael, progenitor to the Muslim people.
