The Song of Songs: A Kol Ami Book Club selection

Tuesday, Jul 21st 6:30p to 8:00p"Oh, give me of the kisses of your mouth, for your love is more delightful than wine." So opens one English translation of a titillating part of the Jewish Bible, Shir ha-Shirim, The Song of Songs, on its face a love poem, but deeper down maybe, the rabbis argue, a story of the Jews' love of God. Given that romance always springs eternal AND we are called to love God in the Sh'ma AND we haven't done a poem in a while, let's dig into this. Choose your favorite translation (or the original Hebrew!) and bring it to discuss with your Kol Ami Book Club buddies! Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/95434070927

    Shabbat-Shavuot Evening Service
    Friday, May 29th 6:45p to 7:45p
A special night of celebration as we celebrate Shavuot-our receiving of Torah at Mt. Sinai, and the gift of Shabbat-a time for connection and rest from the travails of the world. We will begin with worship that encompasses both Shavuot and Shabbat. We will follow our service with a special study session/discussion (will probably begin around 7:30 pm), bringing Torah Study into the contemporary issues we face as Jews. As we are still living in a Zoom world, feel free to have your own Shabbat dinner while we study. Traditionally, we eat a dairy meal to celebrate Shavuot. Kol Ami Book Club- Unorthodox
    Tuesday, May 26th 6:30p to 8:00p
Now adapted as a Netflix TV show, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots is the autobiographical story of author Deborah Feldman, who grew up under a code of relentlessly enforced customs governing everything, including what she could wear, to whom she could speak and what she was allowed to read. It was stolen moments spent with the works of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott that helped her begin to imagine an alternative way of life. Trapped as a teenager in a sexually and emotionally dysfunctional marriage to a man she barely knew, she gave birth at 19, and the tension between Deborah’s desires and her responsibilities as a good Hasidic wife grew more explosive. She realized that, for the sake of herself and her son, she had to escape. Read the book and/or watch the Netflix show and come prepared to discuss with your Kol Ami Book Club buddies! https://us02web.zoom.us/j/91118307429
