Rabbi's Week in Review
I had a number of individual meetings, what I refer to as one-on-ones, last week. These meetings could all be characterized as work meetings — meetings with people whom I work with as rabbi in one way or another.
Yet our conversations were not limited to business concerns. In one meeting in particular, we never even got around to discussing business. We spent our time getting to know each other personally, and sharing how the ... Click here to read the rest of Rabbi Doug's blog post.
This Week's Torah Portion Parashat Tzav (Vayikra/Leviticus 6:1-8:36)
Continuing the discussion of the sacrificial offerings, we read this week of the zevach shelamim, the sacrifice of well-being or peace. It is an offering of gratitude that is offered individually. According to Nachmanides, the Ramban, we get beyond the recognition of miracles to acknowledge the less apparent wonders of the world, to cultivate an attitude of gratitude awareness. As I cited when I was ordained as rabbi, when we have finally reached Messianic times, “all offerings [prayers] will be abolished except the thanksgiving offering [prayer].” (Vayikra Rabba 9:2)
Upcoming Kol Ami Event
Kol Ami Second-Night Passover Seder By Ray Berger
Kol Ami gathers in person for a seder on the second night of Passover, Thursday, April 6. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the seder starting at 6 p.m. Register by this Sunday, April 2 — click here.
Rabbi Doug has new Haggadot for this year’s service, compiled by Rabbi Ellen Bernstein, his seminary colleague. (Rabbi Bernstein is the founder of the Jewish ecological movement.) It comes with interesting and easy-to-follow commentary on different parts of the seder, along with beautiful illustrations. Lara Steinel, our music director, will provide musical accompaniment for the service.
The seder is vegetarian (not vegan) and catered. Attendees are asked to bring their own wine or grape juice. The cost is $25 for those 12 and older, $15 for those aged 6-11, and free for children 5 and younger.
The seder takes place at Guadalupe Center, 1015 Avenida Cesar E Chavez, in Kansas City, Mo. (Guadalupe Center has free adjacent parking and is near KC's downtown Crossroads Arts District.)
Register by Sunday, April 2, by clicking here.
