Rabbi's Week in Review
We’ve entered into a three-week period of mourning on the Jewish calendar that culminates on Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the month of Av. It is the only other major fast day on the calendar other than Yom Kippur. The ninth of Av is when, according to tradition, both the first and second Temples were destroyed. It is a day of great sadness.
It’s Back-to-School Time at MLK School Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, one of our social-justice partners, starts a new school year August 19. We will help provide much needed toiletry items for the students, such as deodorant, shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste, lotion with shea or cocoa butter, petroleum jelly, and sanitary pads. You can place your donations in a box by the front door at All Souls Friday, August 9, at our Shabbat Shulchan gathering from 6 to 7 p.m.
We thank you in advance for your support. These items will be greatly appreciated. — Pat Clinton and Sheryl Kretchmer
This Week's Torah Portion Parashat Matot-Mas’ei (Bamidbar/Numbers 30:2-36:13)
This week’s double Torah portion completes the Book of Bamidbar/Numbers. We read about cities of refuge, established so that people do not effectuate vigilante justice — acting with anger for having been victimized denies due process. In present times, we are discovering people who have been wrongly convicted of a capital offense and sentenced to death. Our state of Missouri, and its attorney general and governor have been particularly egregious in not freeing those who, through new evidence, have been proven to be wrongly imprisoned.
Upcoming Community Event
Observing Tisha B’Av We have the opportunity to be part of the community-wide observance of Tisha B’Av, startomg at 8:15 p.m. Monday, August 12, at Congregation Beth Shalom (142nd and Lamar, in Overland Park). This important fast day includes beautiful mournful music, readings, study and discussion. Rabbi Doug will be participating in the service. Click here for more info and/or to register (for in-person or virtual participation).
