Rabbi's Week in Review
This past Sunday evening into Monday was Tu B’Av, the 15th day of the month of Av. It is a lesser known, post-biblical celebration, reflecting a time in Jewish history celebrating the beginning of the grape harvest and, of greater prominence, a day of love and connection. For easy reference and understanding, it is characterized by some as a Jewish Valentine’s Day.
There is no specific ritual connected to Tu B’Av other than ... Click here to read the rest of Rabbi Doug's blog post.
Social Justice Event
School Drive Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, one of our social-justice partners, starts a new school year this week. We will help provide much needed toiletry items for the students, such as deodorant, shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes and toothpaste, lotion with shea or cocoa butter, petroleum jelly, and sanitary pads. These items will be greatly appreciated.
You can place your donations in a box by the front door at All Souls this Friday, August 23, at 6:45 p.m. when Shabbat blessings and a BYO picnic with ice-cream-sundae bar take place. We thank you in advance for your support. — Pat Clinton (Image by vectorportal.com)

This Week's Torah Portion Parashat Ekev (Devarim/Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25)
In continuing what has always impressed me as Moses’ ethical will, he warns B’nai Yisrael, the Children of Israel, that the good things they have received and will receive in the future are not of their own doing and they should show gratitude to G-d. Seeing what we receive through a lens of what G-d provides becomes tangible in our interpersonal relationships — what the people in our lives do for us. It truly does take a village, reflecting that our covenant with G-d is a communal covenant. There is not one person in this world who can alone repair our broken world. It takes all of us, building coalitions with others not like us and working together to change the world for good.
