Rabbi's Week in Review I always like this time of year; the quick transition from Yom Kippur to Sukkot. Well… I should say I like getting to Sukkot after a somewhat grueling yet important Yom Kippur observance. (Keeping energy in the transition, building our Sukkah, and prepping for all that is to come is its own challenge.)
I have commented on more than one occasion how I like the idea that, after making commitments to ourselves to do better in the new year (5786), Sukkot coming five days later immediately gives us the opportunity to make good on those commitments...Read more.
This Week's Torah Portion Shemot/Exodus 33:12-34:26
For our Sukkot celebration there are various Torah readings assigned. For Shabbat Sukkot we read from the Book of Shemot/Exodus 33:12-34:26. As we read about Sukkot and the other two pilgrimage festivals, Pesach and Shavuot, we also read about Moses receiving the second set of tablets with the Asseret Dibrot-the Ten Commandments, after breaking the first set in anger. After Yom Kippur and contemplating what we did wrong in the past, Sukkot gives us the opportunity for another chance to do better; to live according to our Jewish values as we open our Sukkah and our hearts to welcoming others in.
