I know it sounds cliche, but it really is hard to believe that as I write this, we have made our way through the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, and now are midway through Sukkot. I have to admit that I have approached this time with a bit of fear — fear as to the possible outcome of the coming election and fear for the future of Israel-Palestine.
Sukkot, Z’man Simchateinu, the season of our joy, is truly that, even in the most difficult of times. We gather in the sukkah to proclaim that goodness still exists in the world, that the four species encompassing the lulav and etrog can serve as universal symbols, emblematic of the humanity we all possess.
This week is our annual program in support of the Migrant Farmworkers Assistance Fund. We head out to Lafayette County, Mo., to witness firsthand all of the great work being done by the organization, the work of Suzanne Gladney and Alan Lubert. Their work lifts up the dignity of migrant farmworkers, incredibly hardworking people who simply want a better life for their families and themselves.
As we celebrate Sukkot, let us invite all into our sukkah (either literally or figuratively), to be a sheltering presence. Let us carry that mission throughout the year. As Sukkot is a time of joy, let us share our joy with others.
