Missouri governor Mike Kehoe appears to be zeroing in, or taking the lead from the efforts in Texas, to thwart democracy and the will of the people by gerrymandering out congressional districts that represent voters of color. This, in and of itself, is alarming. In addition, in stating his views, Kehoe said that this would allow Missouri to live according to its “Christian values.”
I can’t believe I need to say this in 2025, both the US and the Missouri Constitution say nothing about our nation, or our state, being a Christian nation. The religious establishment clauses of both Constitutions provides for those who desire to live according to their Christian values to freely do so without interference from the government. Likewise, we as Jews, are afforded the same rights to live according to our Jewish values without government interference.
We are in the midst of an authoritarian attack on our democracy. We must do all we can, each of us to stop it. We as Jews have never done well under authoritarian rule. Look for ways you can be involved in the days and weeks to come.
