This coming Monday we celebrate Labor Day. I think about the long history of Jewish involvement with the worker movement, the formation of unions in order to gain what we now take for granted as basic rights for workers. Yet these rights are at risk, and the fight for workers to make a living wage, have access to quality healthcare that should be everyone’s right, and just to have time with family without the need to hold down multiple jobs continues.

Unions have been, and continue to be instrumental in insuring that workers rights are protected, and they are provided lives of dignity.  With the Missouri legislature denying the will of the people by overturning Missourians’ votes to establish paid sick leave, and the the attack on our democracy by redistricting our Congressman out of his seat, we must continue the fight. Rights for workers, and basic human rights for everyone is under threat when we lose our democracy.

Celebrating Labor Day is more than a picnic.  Let’s celebrate the contribution of workers by gathering together at Mill Creek Park east side of the Plaza at noon to make our voices heard.
