Rabbi's Week in Review - September 16, 2025

What to say as we approach the new year 5786? Can we somehow get beyond the present state of fear and polarization that is infecting our country and our world? While I feel that, as rabbi, it is important to project some sense of optimism and hope, regardless of how the general consensus leans to a more bleak outlook, I have to admit to having my moments this week. This past week it has been the response to the murder of right extremist, Charlie Kirk, by leaders who have, instead of calling for an end to political violence regardless of its origin, stoked the flames and fire that will only lead to more violence. That, coupled with the unconstitutional acts of our state legislature, has left me wondering about the pathway forward in 5786.

I do believe there is an answer. It comes with the strength we derive from each other, coming together as a community of caring and spiritual meaning. As I have often said, being in community with other good people gives me hope, and keeps me sane during these insane times in which we live. I feel this most keenly within our Kol Ami community - but I also feel it in the way different communities can come together to work for the common good of everyone.

At a time when people are not predisposed as they were in my parent’s (Zichronah L’Vracha-of blessed memory) generation to “joining,” to connecting strongly to a particular community or group, I believe whole-heartedly that our very special Jewish community has a role to play. We can show up for each other and to be a refuge for those seeking to provide comfort and support for others, and to be G-d’s partner in making this a better world.

In the coming year 5786, let us endeavor to strengthen and grow our Jewish community of support and comfort. Let us be, as it is stated in the Book of Isaiah, a light to the nations. Let us get beyond our fear and not let it be an obstacle to living out our highest Jewish values of fighting against oppressing the stranger, and to observe the mitzvah of loving the stranger.

Let the year of 5786 be a year of purpose and hope. Shana Tova to you, and all those you love.
