This Week's Torah Portion-

This week’s Torah portion [April 20-25] is a double portion, Parashat Tazria-Metzora (Vayikra/Leviticus 12:1-15:33). We read this week about rituals surrounding a variety of skin diseases; how they are detected and treated. Within these rituals was a means by which those inflicted were quarantined until their full recovery was assured. Hoping that the lessons of our brethren from antiquity will be carried forward into our present crisis, and that COVID-19 is eradicated sooner rather than later.

Weekly Features-

This Friday, April 24, beginning at 6:45 p.m., is a very special evening service.

The monthly Shabbat Speaker Series presents Jessica Rockhold, the Executive Director of the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education. Yom HaShoah Remembrance Day is this month, and the brief talk will give us the opportunity to learn how the work of MCHE preserves memory and uses the lessons of the past to create present-day bridges of understanding. The talk and discussion will follow the Friday Shabbat service conducted by Rabbi Doug Alpert and Music Director Lara Steinel.

We have changed our Kol Ami website platform at the same time as we are learning how to create a virtual community via Zoom as Zoom is going through its own adolescence. OY VEH!!!! A recipe for frustration all around.
So please have patience as we work out processes, and we count on your flexibility and graceful pivoting as we learn together. Please watch this newsletter weekly, as we will be updating how-to’s for a while until things smooth out.

Check first with the weekly newsletter for upcoming event info and click on the links to the website, where you will find more details about timing, Zoom links, and whether you need to register or not. Some events are not publically available on the web until we have information about the person(s) wanting to attend.

If an event calls for registration, fill in the name and email information on the right and make sure to check the small box that asks for the number of people registering for the event.
You can always go to our website at Kolamikc.org and look under News & Events to find out what’s happening and how to join.
If you are having difficulties, please contact office@kolamikc.org.
Those of you who are interested in participating in Book Club or in the Meditation Classes should email office@kolamikc.org to let us know to put you on the regular distribution list for those events.

Community Events-

Wednesday, April 29, 2-3 pm. Missouri Jobs With Justice will be holding a virtual rally, focusing on the rights of workers who are risking their lives so ours can be sustained — grocery workers, home healthcare workers, small family farmers, and all workers who are now unemployed due to COVID-19. The rally will also be focused on ensuring full and fair elections, and that no one’s voting rights are denied. The link to register is: https://bit.ly/RallyWithWorkers

Speaking of those who bring food to our tables, Suzanne Gladney, the executive director of the Migrant Farmworkers Alliance and a leader in the pursuit of justice, has reached out to us. Migrant farmworkers, who are essential to bringing food to our tables, are in need of our help. If you are in a position to give so that these farmworkers can eat, the contact information is:

Shabbat Evening Service with Guest Speaker Jessica Rockhold: For our Shabbat Speaker series on Friday, April 24 we will welcome Jessica Rockhold, Executive Director of the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education (MCHE). We look forward to Jessica enhancing our own observance of Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday, April 21.

Jessica Rockhold, Executive Director of the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education (MCHE). Jessica earned her B.A. in Modern European History and her M.A. in Museum Studies with an emphasis in Holocaust History from the University of Kansas. She served as the research assistant to the Senior Historian of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum before joining the staff of MCHE in June 2003. At MCHE she served as the Director of Education and the Associate Director before being named Executive Director in 2020. - Friday, April 24 6:45pm-8:15pm

Jewish Meditation: Meditation helps focus more of one’s mind on the present moment. In this monthly one-hour session, participants learn and practice the basics of Jewish meditation with an introduction to each session’s theme by Rabbi Alpert.
